OUR FUNCTIONS
The Commission is mandated to, in terms of Section 243 of the constitution;
- Promote awareness of and respect for human rights and freedoms;
- Promote the protection, development and attainment of human rights and freedoms;
- Monitor, assess and ensure observance of human rights and freedoms in Zimbabwe.
- Receive and consider complaints from the public and take appropriate action;
- Conduct research on issues relating to human rights, freedoms and social justice.
- Protect public against abuse of power and maladministration by the State and public institutions and by officers of those institutions.
- Investigate the conduct of any authority or person, suspected of violating any of the human rights provided in the Constitution’s Declaration of Rights.
- To secure appropriate redress, including recommending the prosecution of offenders, where human rights or freedoms have been violated:
- To direct the Commissioner-General of Police to investigate cases of suspected criminal violations.
- Make recommendations to Parliament on best ways of promoting, protecting and observance of human rights and freedoms;
- Take necessary action to assist victims of human rights violations to receive justice;
- Visit and inspect prisons, detention places, refugee camps and similar facilities where persons with mental disabilities are detained and make necessary recommendations about their conditions to the responsible Minister.
